"Gah! You worthless runt!" I felt the sting of a rough slap to my cheek as I fell backwards into the sandy street. "Don't come back, urchin!" I got up, dazed. I had just tried to borrow a loaf of bread from one of the market stalls, and the guy went crazy! I mean, seriously, that guy has enough paying customers that he could buy the entire palace! I walked away glumly, hungry for food and adventure. But mainly food. "Fresh fruit!" "Fish! Fish!" I passed by all different types of market stalls. Food, trinkets, clothing, you name it and it's there.

"Oof!" I ran into somebody, and fell over. "'Ey! You lil' runt!" I looked up and rolled. Just barely dodging an angry man's blade. I rolled to the left and jumped up as the man jabbed again. "Stand still, so I can make you squeal!" He bellowed. I ducked as he took a swipe at my head. "Hey! I need that!" I retorted. "Oh really? You ain't got much in there!" He thrusted for my stomach as I leapt back. He had put all his strength into the thrust, and when he didn't het me, he fell forward, dazed.

"Clear the market! Clear the market"

Everyone started moving to the sides in panic. I decided now would be a good time to withdraw from the fight. "Oi! Come back 'ere!" The man yelled. I easily lost him in the mass chaos of the crowd.

"Clear the market!"

I ran against the crowd, toward the direction the yelling came from. Probably another palace procession.. I thought. I made it out of the crowd, and into the flying hooves of a dark horse. "Whoa!" One of the hooves smacked me in the face and I fell back. "Outta the way!" Somebody yelled. I was too dazed to respond. "Get up!" I felt two rough hands yank me up off the ground. I stood directly before the king.

Not good.

He looked very displeased. He wore persian-like robes, and a decorative crown. His expression was that of a cranky old man who's lost his cane. "Throw him in the dungeon." The king said. In my dazed state, it sounded like "Show him a pomegranate." The guard holding me pulled my hands behind my back and tied them, not gentle at all. "Father!" A female's voice spoke. "What is it, Mariwen?" The king asked, somewhat irritatedly. "Father, why throw him in the dungeons? He'd make a perfect messenger boy." Meriwen said. The king thought for a moment, and decided to make me a "Messenger". "He's all yours." The king said. The guard holding me pushed me along, and I continued on with the procession. Dreading my arrival at the palace.

"Sit." Meriwen commanded. I sat down on a small cushion. I had been lead to her room, and the guards still hadn't untied me. It was going to be a long day..
"What is your name?" She asked. Her tone was not pleasant, nor was it angered. It was simply serious, and slightly curious. "Runt." I said. "Truthfully, otherwise I shall give you one." Meriwen said. "Urchin." I replied. "Stop toying with me." She said. I smirked. "Alright. Some call me 'Merk'. Others call me the 'Prince of scum'. What are you gonna call me?" I said. "Obnoxious. Now, you'll need to get cleaned up. I trust you at least have a vague idea of a bath?" Meriwen asked. "A bath?" I wondered what it was. Meriwen smiled a little deviously. "You'll learn soon enough."

I walked out of the bath, feeling refreshed. The princess had given me a new set of clothes to wear, as well as sandals. "Done!" I exclaimed. Meriwen walked into the bath, and came out with a disgusted look on her face. "The water.. Is brown." She said. She crinkeled her nose and shivered in pure disgust. "How long has it been since you've had a bath?" She asked me. "I can't remember." I responded. She laughed at this. "Come along now, I'm going to train you a bit." "How old are you?" I asked curiously. She looked to be eighteen, but acted as if she were an old queen. "Twenty." She replied.

She lead me towards a large building. Hay bales were stacked outside, as well as numerous bags of oats and barley. "This is the stables." Meriwen said proudly. "Camels, or horses?" I asked curiously. "Both." Meriwen replied. "Take your pick of any horse!" She said. "Really? Wow!" I exclaimed. I examined each and every horse, and decided upon a young palamino stallion. "This one." I pointed at the horse I had chosen and grinned. "Do you know how to ride?" Meriwen asked. "I'm about to find out!" I exclaimed.

Meriwen showed me how to saddle the horse, as well as get up onto it. I rode in front and she rode behind.

^Actually, the Rune Factory name is spelled "Maerwen". And yes, I see the the clash of personalities. My Meriwen and the other are completely different.

^Pardon me, but you just spammed. And, you haven't answered my question.

I'm beginning to think you have no reason other than your lack of reading abilities.

^Are you ever gonna stop?

After she trained me how to ride, she decided that writing would be a good skill, too. Though, I had no idea what writing was. A few weeks after that came reading. One thing after another, until I was finally ready, finally equipped with the knowledge needed, to say "Hi" to a bunch of people!

"So, how did you earn your the unflattering title 'Prince of scum'?" Meriwen asked. I sat in the chair in her room whilst she sat on her bed brushing her long dark hair. "It's a fascinating story, actually." I began.

"It all started when I was about to borrow a loaf of bread from a market stall.."
"Borrow? Don't you mean steal?" Meriwen scolded. "Hush! I'm telling a story here!" I replied irratatedly. I closed my eyes and leaned back, prepared to tell the story.

"I had borrowed the loaf and was returning to the rooftop where my hideout was when I noticed something was amiss. I checked all my belongings, and nothing seemed to be missing, until I checked my little box. Inside is where I always keep my favorite treasure! It's a small silver talisman. Two tigers, attacking eachother, with each tail forming an 'S' shape. They stood atop a mountain, and on the mountain is a diamond!"

"Really? A diamond?" Meriwen asked, surprised and curious. I opened my eyes and answered irritatedly. I didn't try to hide my annoyance. "Yes, yes, a diamond!" I said. She seemed amused at my little peeve, and motioned for me to join her in the bed. I slowly moved toward the bed. Uneasy, simply because I'd never hung around Females for longer than five to ten seconds in the market. I layed down with my head in her lap. I closed my eyes and let her stroke my hair as I continued the story.
"I found it missing, and saw the culprit escaping through the rooftops. I chased after, and eventually caught up to him, taking back the talisman, and slipping of the roof into a pile of mud. Thus earning me the nickname 'Prince of Scum'"
I finished. "Well.. Then there's the story about my gang of orphans, but it's not for the faint of heart. I doubt you could withstand it." I jested. "Mhm. You can save it for another time, O daring one." She teased. I looked up at her with respect. With awe.

And with irritance. "Will you stop messing with my hair?" I asked. She had me literally wrapped around her finger. "No. Your hair was a mess beforehand, anyway!" She laughed. I snorted and lay there quietly. Pondering quite a few things. The main question was, "Why am I here?"

This ain't over 'till I say it's over.

^It's "OCD". "Dyslexia" just makes it harder to read because your brain jumbles up all of the symbols (Letters) you see.
