Atheists believe that no deities or higher powers exists.

Christians believe in the christian god from the bible.

Agnostics are sort of like atheists, except instead of believing there is no God, they aren't sure. They think there might be one, but there might not.

What makes an Atheist: A person who does not believe in the possibility of any god(s).

What makes a Christian: A person who puts Christ (God of the Bible) before anything else.

So to be an Atheist, all you have to do is talk yourself into believing that you're useless, purposeless, and insignificant, because there is no ultimate being waiting for you in the afterlife.

A non-religious person with any self-respect would not call themselves an atheist.

To an extent, everything is meaningless, but not everything is supposed to have nor does it need a meaning. What is the meaning of a dead fly? Driftwood? I don't need anyone to predispose a use for me, and I personally don't believe that my only meaning stems from worshipping and spread the word of some "higher-being". Unless they're aliens and taking over. I'm alive and I'm going to enjoy being alive while I still am. If I thought I was truly without purpose, I'd kill myself.

An atheist is simply someone who doesn't believe in a god or any deities. That's it. Everything else is their choice to believe in or disbelieve in.

I don't have anything against religious people simply because they're religious either. If they want to believe in a God: cool. If they don't: cool. Just don't be an asshole.

You are truly without purpose if you do not believe in some sort of afterlife. You're just another obsolete grain of sand in the hourglass of time. You'll be forgotten. You'll live, you'll love, you'll learn...but for what? Your own experience? That's fine...but then why be a good person? Why should we be nice? Why is animal abuse, or child abuse, or any abuse at all, a bad thing? What makes anything a "bad" thing? If it makes you happy--whether bad or good--why shouldn't you do it? You're living for your own experiences, right?
I'm not talking about murdering or stealing (necessarily) or other offenses against typical laws...I'm saying why should racism, homophobia, sexism, hate speech, discrimination, being an asshole, cheating, etc. be frowned upon if we can all live how we want? Why should we care about anything if we only live 100 years at best?

Religion gives people purpose and meaning behind the things they do. There's a reason to be nice, to not cheat, to be generous...doing that on your own terms without religion just means you have a nice personality, but that's it...so what?
