About a week ago my friend Mikey was sad so I tried to cheer him up and he told me he loved me. He has a boyfriend he's been with for 2 years that he loves very much so I knew he meant as a friend but even with good friends (we're online friends but yeah we're pretty close) it makes me uncomfortable because I only like to use it for very specific people.
I think the only person I genuinely tell "I love you" to on a regular basis is my best friend....
I even told him I don't throw it around casually and although I tell him I love him a lot it almost has a stronger meaning, especially my security about the phrase.
In my opinion, you should be more careful who you say I love you to. Sure, some people may be more casual about it than others but... I mean not-so-Cool Kid has another gf and he tells his dude friends (
somewhat jokingly but still) that he loves them all the time but he never says it to her? It's weird to me.

One of these languages is actually Japanese.
They mainly have three.
There's "daisuki" which would directly translate to "I like [you] very much". You would use this for the friends you love platonically or even a crush you don't know extremely well. I believe this is also what you would use for your family - if you're normal. This is more the "casual 'I love you'"
"Aishiteru" is translated to "I love you" and you'd use it for a boyfriend/girlfriend. This one has a more romantic meaning to it.
There's also "Koishiteru". However, it is rarely used. It translates to "I am in love", and you'd only use it for the person you want to spend the rest of your life with.
Remember, the Japanese are more shy about expressing emotions than we typically are in the West. It's just their culture and everything.

Sometimes I mean it, but I find it that saying it and genuinely meaning is really hard for me. Like, I don't even say it to my mom. She's like "I love you" and I'm like "Yeah, cool."
