No, you're completely wrong. Lost Levels is the true sequel, just look at it, it has the exact graphics as the first one.
The main reason why Nintendo didn't use the real Mario Bros 2 because they thought it was too hard for American gamers. So instead, they used a Japan exclusive game called Doki Doki Panic, replaced all characters with Mario characters, and renames it to Super Mario Bros 2 in the US.
The US had no idea that they're playing Doki Doki Panic instead of Super Mario Bros 2. Years later, thanks to the power of the Internet, Americans realized that ''Super Mario Bros 2'' isn't the real Super Mario Bros 2. So then Nintendo also realized that they were wasting their time, so they released the real Super Mario Bros 2, and in the US is known as The Lost Levels because instead of playing that game, they played Doki Doki Panic.
