I hinted that I wanted to be a forum mod. A lot.

...Aaaand look where it got me! Nah, the real reason was that I started spending a lot of time on the forums and had a lot of approving friends here.

But, in all seriousness, hinting or begging that you want to be a mod makes you look like a fool.

As for the first highlight, that is not entirely true. Becoming a moderator doesn't mean you have to be active. It's a few other things. We just need active mods, so it's not entirely true that you have to be active to become a mod.

As for the second highlight, I agree. Many users, even old users (not saying names) have been begging to become a moderator when I first became Community Manager. I had a block full of "I want to become a mod" whispers, from new and old users. I got 10 PMs that day too. 7 from mod beggers, 2 from reports, and 1 miscellaneous. Point is, not all users you think will be perfect and non-mod beggers. They might or might not be.

(and the total mod whisper from different accounts were 7 people. Total of whisper were I believe over 9000. So yeahhhhhh...)
