I have mixed feelings about Hibike! Euphonium. Coming from the perspective of someone who's a sixth year band member, it actually portrays the concert band environment accurately aside from a few cultural differences. It even portrays different attitudes people have towards band. However, I feel this is muddied by the overly dramatic and borderline yuri scenes. People getting overly upset that someone gets a certain part isn't something that happens often. It certainly never turns into a fiasco where the band director has to intervene.

The borderline yuri scenes do seem out of place, but I don't think Reina's personality in them is. She's meant to be an overbearing presence. Reina most likely won't ever have any truly romantic feelings towards Kumiko anyways, given the fact that she's in love with the teacher.
It was weird how <3 <3 <3 Kaori's crazy friend freaked out over he not getting the part, but I really think that only happened to push Reina's personality and superiority complex. We all knew she would do better.

I couldn't think of another word for it although she knows she is superior, but wants to still improve to be the best.
