The problem here is that people dont understand how princesses work in FiM. They aren't born into it, and it isnt something given to them. Allow me to explain.
Out of the other three princesses in Equestria, what is one thing they have in common. They are all masters of a specific type of magic. Celestia and Luna are masters of the sun and moon, respectively, and Princess Cadence is a master of love. Twilight didnt become a princess by solving her friends` problem. She became one by becoming well-established in the magic of friendship.
This is also something that didnt suddenly happen to her, we have seen about three or four winters in the series. My theory is that the first three seasons take place in about four or five years of their time. This was something that was being built ul from the beginning, and is not just something shoehorned in there to sell toys.

Season four has long since disproved this. There was an episode where Twilight couldnt even hail a god damn taxi. There is also the op e ner that establishes that she still has plenty to learn. Twilight may be well-established in friendship, but still does not know everything. If you were to watch season 4 you would see that she hasn't changed much, if at all.

Ah, but it is. She stated from the very beginning that she wanted Twilight to become a successor to Sun-butt.
Princess Twilight is a good thing because we are now able to explore Twilight`s character even further than before. It allows for more world building and character development, and not just for Twilight. She still allows the other ponies to solve their own problems, and only steps in when she is needed, just like previous episodes.
The show has not declined since her coronation, and if in your eyes it has, it is not because of Twilight, who still remains at number three on my list, and Magical Mystery Cure in my top ten.

BlueBlur (2014-03-17 20:01:33)@StatGuardian About your first theory, you arent the first one to question Starswirl on that the most popular headcanon in the fandom is that Starswirl was using that spell to try and ascend to alicorn status, but because on his lack of experience with friendship, it backfired...turning him into a certain Draconequuis we know.
As for Celestia and Luna, they are difficult to figure out. It is widely accepted that they were born alicorns though. As for Cadence, though....youll have to read "The Crystal Heart Spell"
