This might be because I've been a New Yorker my whole life, but that's how the majority of the world sees us 'Muricans. Besides, I only view them in a more humorous point of view, not a political view (except my comment on most of them being pro-Republican).
You won't see me here, but you might find me if you look in the right places.

The war wasn't about slavery, specifically....it was caused by the southern states seceeding from the union, because the North was oppressing them...it would be like the South trying to seceed now because the Government just forced all states to make gay marriage legal...not because they hate gays and want to disctiminate, but rather the government has no right to force a law on a state, and so we have to fight to keep our independence.
The confederate flag isn't to voice how you think blacks should still be slaves and whatnot, it's to voice the pride you have for your ancestors (or just the South in general) for sticking to their guns.
Blacks weren't the only slaves in America...there were white and Asian slaves as well.
Sure, there's probably a bitter southern racist who flies a condeferate flag and sits on his porch to cuss at any blacks who walk by, but it's not fair to assume anyone with Southern Pride is a racist biggot...there were many reasons the south attempted to seceed, not just because of slavery.
People aren't flying confed flags now to twist the knife...people have always been doing it, and it never really caused a problem before until so suddenly.
You want to fly a confed flag? Fine.
A gay flag? Fine,
A Muslim flag? Fine.
A symbolic flag can't really speak for someone's inent, specifically. It's a piece of cloth that isn't hurting anyone.

I wouldn't care about Confederate flags. Of course, I hate the background of slavery behind it (because I'm black... and I'm proud). And the fact that a handful of people in the south still have racist beliefs is really why people might think the Confederate flags should be banned.
