Interesting argument. However, I see it like this

#1 PS4
#2 Xbox One
#3 Wii U

The Xbox One may have kicked up a lot of negativity, but everyone's talking about it. Bad press is still press. I've heard a lot of nextgen predictions and usually it's PS4 vs Xbox One, most people don't even consider the Wii U. I see the One starting off slow but Americans love TV and Xbox so I definitely see it picking up.

Wii U sales predictions

30-50 million

PS4 sales predictions

80-120 million

Xbox One sales predictions

80-120 million

As you can see, I gave myself a lot of margin for error but I'm guessing the numbers will fall somewhere between there.

Pikarceus, why do you think the Wii U will sell so low?

Wii was a fad. Motion controls did not become the "future" as everyone thought, but tacked on minor add-ons.

Wii sold so well because it was a fad. Before the Wii, you had the Gamecube which sold 20+ million and the N64 which sold 30+ million.

Nintendo hasn't had good 3rd party support since the SNES either.

PS3 and 360 are popular because of 3rd party games (Battlefield, Fifa, Madden, Call of Duty)

1st party may not be enough to save the Wii U, look at the N64 and Gamecube.

I really doubt the Wii U is making a comeback. I expect a sales spike, but it is not another 3DS.

@Tetris-Yeah, the online is free, but I'll take good paid online over free crappy online.

BattleField, Call of Duty, Fifa, and Madden appeal more to the masses than most of what Nintendo has, aside from Pokemon and Mario.

Wii U is only $50 less than the PS4, a system 8 times as powerful.

Fun fact: The PS2 is getting Fifa 14, but not Wii U. Ouch.

Another con of the Wii U is region-lock. None of the other consoles have restrictions on where you get your games from.

I don't see the Wii U backwards compatibility as a huge advantage.

-Pretty much everyone already has a Wii anyway.
-What Wii games are even worth playing anymore? Not many.

No one buys a new system to play old games.

PS4 looks to give you more, as it's not even out and its library already looks better than what the Wii U has.

Also: While PS4 and Xbox One aren't backwards compatible, it's only a matter of time before you can at least transfer over your downloaded games.

As for discs, is moving around some cords THAT hard?

I see this being more of an issue with handhelds. Your pockets have less space than your living room after all.

I already got a Wii U for Christmas, and I'm getting a PS4 launch day.

Xbox One can smd, seriously. With a $499 price tag, and a Kinect that stays on 24/7 and watches your ass very second, it's truly not worth it.

But if you're a Halo fanboy and like TV (which you already have a box and already pay for) then go spend your money.

@Tetris-The main flaw with your argument is that casuals don't care about Wii U. The majority of its sales have come from hardcore Nintendo fans, such as yourself.

Many casuals are too into tablet and phone gaming to really care about dedicated gaming consoles.

On top of that, a good amount have also migrated to Xbox. A lot of Moms snapped up that $99 4GB Xbox+Kinect bundle. We may laugh, but that was a brilliant stroke on Microsoft's part. Casuals see the dirt cheap price and ignore the absurdly low storage. They buy it in droves, and cha-ching! That's Microsoft's bank account.

The Wii U has an identity crisis. It doesn't know whether it should be core or casual, and as a result it ends up failing at both.

I'm talking at this moment in time.

I have no idea what will happen this holiday. The Wii U could get crushed between the PS4 or Xbox One, or it could take off. Who knows?

@Kalaab-I said that casuals weren't interested in it, which is pretty close to your statement. If they aren't interested it obviously is doing a pretty poor job of catering to them.

It's definitely not for core gamers, if you actually owned a 360 or PS3 you would realize that.

My gens aren't mixed up, previous generations are often in direct competition with future generations. Look at all the cross-gen titles like Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed IV.

Much of the Wii's 3rd party support were PS2 ports, a system that came out a generation before it.

Most of Wii U's 3rd party support is PS3/360 ports. I honestly don't think it can compete with PS4/One, as it's not even on their level. It's online is worse than what the PS3/360 has. Also, if it has no competition right now, as you say, why isn't it selling? Because people prefer to buy PS3/360, that's why. So yeah, it is competing with them.

As for the Wii crushing the PS3/360, Nintendo fans forget this gen isn't over. PS3/360 have a good three years left in them, and will probably match or surpass Wii as they're still selling buckets while the Wii isn't. In fact, a few weeks ago I saw an article on Nintendolife saying how the 360 was about to pass Wii sales in the UK.

PS3 and 360 are neck and neck with about 80 million sales each, Wii is about 100. I definitely see them passing up the Wii within three years.
