considering all the problems it had during development (massive studio interference, injured actors, the cast having to stay weeks and months later because someone from higher up wanted some themes or changed), the Super Mario Bros. movie was surprisingly competent (especially when you consider similar issues happened with Batman And Robin and Spider-Man 3, and those movies were much worse, IMO).

Also, yeah, if you look at it from it being a movie based on the games, you have every reason to be disappointed with it, but if you watch it with the mindset that rather it's a celebration of all things Mario in the most '90s way possible, you might enjoy it yourself; and if you read up on what it was originally supposed to be, and everything that changed to make the final product... what it is, it's not only easier to appreciate it, but it's actually pretty damn fascinating.
