You get what you pay for.

You all know that saying right? And for the most part, it is true. Most of the time, the higher the price, the better the product. A $40 retail 3DS game is typically has more content and better graphics then a $5 eshop game. Of course, there are some expectations. Such as Bird Mania 3D, which isn't even worth its price tag of $1.99.

The game doesn't look half bad. The visuals are very crisp and clean, and the sprites look very nice and have decent animation. It isn't up to par with some other 3DS Download titles, but it is beyond what DSiware is capable of graphically. The 3D is very nice the way it is used with the background to make different layers of stereoscopic goodness. Altogether, Bird Manina 3D is pretty easy on the eyes.

The sound also isn't too bad. The music I found was very catchy, and it suits the style of gameplay very well. There are lots of other minor sounds effects that really won't have much of an impact on you though. The music dominates everything.



The controls are pretty simple. You use the touchscreen, Circle Pad, or D-pad to move your bird up and down. You use L and R to boost, which allows you to wipe out enemies. Shame this good control scheme doesn't work because of the absolutely broken level design.

This is one of those games that go on and on, similar to Temple Run. I dislike games like that, but this isn't Bird Mania's true problem. The problem is the broken level design. The whole game consists of dodging trees, other birds, you name it. A huge flaw is that some trees are in the foreground and some are in the background. The ones in the foreground will hit and kill you, but not the ones in the background. It is extremely difficult to tell them apart when you are dodging birds and bees. The trees also dominate the game, some are almost as tall as the screen. This game is no fun, it consists of you dying cheaply every thirty seconds or less. It gets worse. Your goal is to collect stars, which boost your score and make you go faster. Do you see the problem with going faster? Because of the cheapness of your deaths, you will be forced to hit "restart" and waste the next hour of your life dying over and over again.

Since this is one of those games that goes on "forever" and has no separate levels or worlds, the content is almost nonexistent. Sure, it has a list of high scores and some nice achievements, but neither provide much satisfaction. It also has "Story" which actually fooled me into thinking it was a proper game mode. Nope, it's just a slide show that very poorly tells the reason why you fly around dying every thirty seconds.



This game isn't horrible, it isn't the worst game you will encounter in your life, but it is not worth two dollars when you can buy similar games on the Iphone for less minus the 3D effect. Two dollars may sound like a bargain, but for this game it isn't.

I've played free games on my family's Ipod that are far superior to this. Believe me, it is not worth two dollars.

^ I don't know what you're smoking, but most of the DSiWare titles aren't that bad. There are a few really crappy ones, but you can easily tell what they are.
