DeathKid(2012-10-06 03:13:57)I guess this is a sort-of rant, but I just wanted to say something about representing characters as "special" or retarded on TV shows. It seems like this is almost taboo to do on TV shows, yet several shows for kids have things that could be considered worse that retardedness, I guess it is just a sensitive subject. Take one example, the case of Derpy Hooves. She was a "background pony" that appeared in almost every episode, a sort of "where's waldo" type of thing hidden for the fans. Originally she only existed because of a visual glitch causing her to have "derped" eyes, but fans caught on, and created their own kind of "back story" for her, naming her as the mailman of ponyville who loved muffins. As the character became exceedingly popular, she eventually made an appearance in an episode. She was shown as clumsy, and she talked in a tone of voice that made her appear "special." Now, people were in outrage. The same fans that had adored her started calling her offensive and horrible, and demanding she be removed or her voice be changed. Yet, I was watching Cartoon Network, and they have this thing called "Cartoon Planet" where they show all the old cartoons. What interested me was the host. He is a lion looking thing, and he talks in the exact same way as Derpy, plus he appears very dull and draws crude, childish crayon drawings. Plus, he sings these very obviously mock retarded songs that make no sense. Now, why would this be allowed to REGULARLY SHOW on CN when Derpy caused huge fan outrage after ONE APPEARENCE? .
