Creepypasta are generally short horror stories thrown around on the internet, usually posted through forums or e-mail. These stories tend to fall under a few basic archetypes:

Murder/Death: Stories of serial killers, suicide, etc.

Paranormal: Deals with ghosts, demons, and otherwise supernatural or unworldly things.

Lost/twisted episode: Usually a narrator recounting the events concerning a disturbing or warped episode/version of a show.

There's also another archetype which doesn't quite fit in, being "trollpasta," which tend to be intentionally bad or overall crappy.

Creepypasta often has pictures accompanying the shocking, distorted, or otherwise gory content.
