Apperently you will need to perform a system update for your Wii U day 1 to get some features like Wii backwards compatiblilty, Miiverse , Wii U chat( skype like app), the web browser, Nintendo TVii, and Eshop.

So almost all the online things will not be available right out of the box. You also wont be able to play old wii games with out the system update. This wont be a problem if you have Internet at home but to those people who don't have internet will not have these feutures.
