With DOOM 3: BFG Edition coming out, I figured I'd do this.

DOOM

Similar with age.

When DOOM came out in 1993, (that was 19 years ago) it was defined as an innovator in the FPS industry, and it's still pretty good today. If you don't know what the fuss was about, here's me queue.

Graphics
The game looks pretty dated by today's standards. Of course, back in 1993, a home computer couldn't handle a fully rendered 3D game, so they used a method of spriting and raycasting, in which all objects are presented on a single plane. Things such as dropped weapons and corpses were only drawn from one angle, so they would be constantly facing the player. However, the sprite work is excellent- especially on the corpses. This is not a game for the weak of stomach. Enemies' heads explode, intestines spew forth from punctured abdomens, and chests burst open into a bloody mess. The player's hands are veey detailed, but choppy animation makes it look stiff and akward.

Sound
The rock soundtrack is excellent and catchy, although a bit on the grainy side. The grunts of demons can be heard as you progress, instilling a nice sense of suspense as you progress. Gunfire is one of the weaker notes. Most of the weapons sound ok, but shotgun blasts and explosions sound flat and muffled.

Gameplay
It's a little slower paced than today's FPSs, with a lot of emphasis put on explorarion with rewards for those who look carefully. Secret wall doors, teleporters, and hidden switches all offer goodies in which to slaughter the opposition. The gunplay isn't too overwhelming, but can get very hectic at times. The sheer amount of baddies will rip you apart if you're overzealous. Luckily, monster infighting gets those idiots to make short work of each other. Unfortunately, the diffuculty curve can be a bit steep at times. I found playing on the default setting about 5 times more challenging than the next lowest difficulty.

Content
32 levels and 4 episodes (These numbers vary between versions) will give you roughly about 5-6 hours of play, longer if you find the bonus levels. Each level has a lot of stuff to find, so you can always revisit and find stuff you missed. Plus, multiplayer adds to an already rich amount of content.

Conclusion
Though it does show its age at times, DOOM is a solid masterpiece with a lot of reasons for replay value, and the addicting gameplay will probably make this game a permanent one in your collection.
