Well, it's impossible to really know.
Maybe the chicken was wzlking across the road to save his true love, who had not too long earlier couldn't cross the road herself quite fast enough.
Or, maybe, perhaps the chicken was sad. Maybe he was lonely. Maybe he crossed the road to get to the... other side.
