With the upcoming Smash Bros for the 3DS, fans finally get to play Smash Bros for the first time ever on a Nintendo handheld. Since the 3DS gets to have Smash Bros, that kept fans thinking. Could Sakurai developed a Smash Bros game on past Nintendo handhelds? In an interview with Sakurai by Games TM Magazines, he reveals that he actually tried to make a handheld smash bros even before the GBA.

''It’s not that I haven’t wanted to – I thought about it, I did. To be honest, we purely didn’t have the opportunity, it just never came up. And also, to speak freely, if you look at a handheld device preceding anything before the GBA, I don’t know that it would have the capabilities to fully realize Smash Bros.''

The problem is with this idea is that video games can only take up so much memory on the hard drive / cartridge. Once that memory is exceeded, the memory device starts to scramble together data stored on it. Most things have a limited memory capacity to prevent this, thus meaning that the device can only hold so much memory. And SSB would be a hard thing to squeeze onto a standard DS cartridge.
