They were originally gonna have a 3D Kirby game, but the game actually turned into crap, canceling the development leading to the development of Kirby's Epic Yarn.

I think it was after the development of the last Kirby game on GameCube. Nintendo really needed a new Kirby game, so HAL (Kirby developers) tried many Kirby games, and all of them were cancelled, including the 3D Kirby game. The development took a long time, more than 5 years of development for a new Kirby game.

Then the developers gave up, and started fresh. The game was about a prince that ruled a yarn world. Then the developers thought it would have bin better as a new Kirby game. So that's how Kirby's Epic Yarn was born.

They were originally gonna make a paper kirby game, but it got cancelled as well. Also, I heard DYKG doesn't cite their sources, but I love DYKG too.
