Batman: Arkham Origins impressions

This game has been getting mixed reviews, and I'd like to share my thoughts. I got it Friday, played it five straight hours, and played a bunch more today. I'm almost at the end of the main story, which I'll beat tomorrow.

So yeah, new developer, WB Montreal, not Rocksteady. Main reason critics aren't happy. The new team has a very different approach to story-telling. The game has more cut-scenes, and are very good, with motion capture. The story is intense. Batman is younger and is also pissy. What he does to criminals in this game is borderline torture. Combat has been refined a good amount, ESPECIALLY boss battles, holy crap. However, puzzles are identical, are some are literally Arkham City copy-paste jobs. Riddler trophies are gone, but in their place are Enigma data-thingies, which are pretty much the same.

The map is twice the size, and even old-gotham (Area in AC) looks waaaay different, as there aren't giant walls everywhere. The new island is pretty nice, though for whatever reason Batman can't graple to the taller buildings.

WB Montreal is creative but they need to work on their programming. This game has framerate issues, not game-breaking but noticeable when you walk outside after a load screen and during the transition to cutscene.

There is definitely more content than AC. Tons of side missions and extras, and the story is a lot longer. AC 's story was perfectly paced but quite short. Origin's story may slog in some parts but is longer and more satisfying.

The boss battles are glorious, especially Deathstroke and Bane, those are probably two of the best I've experienced in any videogame.

I also want to mention: THE GAME IS HARD. It took me a dozen tries to beat Deathstroke, and I'm a person who completed AC 100%. This game throws a lot at you, very quickly. IGN complained about the tether gadget and shock gloves being over-powered, but you will need them, especially in New Game+ and I Am The Night mode, which will be insanely hard.

I have not tried the MP yet. I've heard it's been crashing, so just as well. When I try it I'll make another thread.

Another thing: A lot of the Assassin's are side-missions. I like that, as it makes you want to play them more.

If you have any questions I didn't answer, ask.

Okay, forget the other topic.

The multiplayer, surprisingly is VERY fun. However, it is suffering from the anti-CoD effect. No one is playing it, everyone is too busy with the single player. I did one match, as finding other players took forever.

Basically, it's 3 vs. 3 vs. 2. Two teams of 3 thugs waging a gang war, plus Batman and Robin. The thugs control like you would in a third person shooter. To balance the game, thugs have a pseudo detective vision that can be used for a limited time and then has to recharge.

When it's thug vs. thug, it plays like a cover shooter, but Batman and Robin make it crazy. You can't just play it like a normal tps because Batman or Robin can glide behind you and take you out.

I was killed many times by a Robin, but they aren't op if a partner is nearby. My mistake was being isolated from the group.

I haven't had a chance to be Batman or Robin yet in the mp, I'll let you know how that goes.

I have it on PS3. It doesn't really matter, as all versions are pretty much the same. Aside from PC which has better graphics and Wii U which doesn't have the mp.

Today I got a chance to play as Batman and Robin in mp. It's similar to the campaign, but Batman (Robin is only in mp) has less gadgets and his punches are dumbed down. It is super easy to take out enemy players, but then the others see you and, pew pew dead.

It's interesting. There are only four maps which sucks though, and while more people are finally playing online there are a lot of communication errors. Thankfully, most happen in the lobby, not the actual match.

Okay guys, I have beaten the main game, New Game Plus, and right not am about 1/4 of the way through I AM The Night mode.

This game has a lot of minor glitches (Thankfully there was a patch) and just feels a bit sloppy compared to AC.

But I just beat Deathstroke for the third time, and wow, that fight never gets old.

The game on 3DS and Vita is a COMPLETELY different game that takes place months after Origins.

I will be getting Origins: Blackgate Prison for Christmas. It's made by ex-Metroid Prime devs and looks awesome.
