Hello, my dear poetry addicts! I just thought I'd write up another guide- on poetry!
I've noticed a lot of sad, depressed poems- don't think poetry is limited to these topics! Also, don't be halfhearted with your writing. Take time on it. It's really annoying when somebody writes a sloppy poem.
Here are a couple of example genres.

LIMERICKS

Limericks are short, humorous poems. The first and second verses rhyme as well as the third and fourth, the fifth being the last one and the odd one out. EX:

There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, "It is just as I feared!
Two Owls and a Hen,
Four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard!"

This is not my poem, by the way.
Think of something bouncing and bubbly and funny. Don't fragment your verses- this leads to a broken limerick that doesn't make sense and isn't funny.

HAIKUS

Haiku poems are a Japanese style of poetry, involving a certain amount of syllables. EX:


Snowflakes fall like ash
Blanketing the dying ground
As the wind whistles

I wrote this one and you can find it in my Haiku Seasons post. Anyway, notice the pattern? Five syllables in the first verse, seven in the second, back to five in the third.
Haikus do not need to rhyme and are very fun to write. You can write a haiku on all sorts of topics.
Note that haikus are a more delicate form and require more thinking.

EXTRA TIPS

Be thoughtful and expressive. How are you feeling? Translate that into a poem- this creates the most awesome and imaginitive poems.
Use unique words. Word choice is very important. Reusing the same words over and over and fragmenting verses are two big no-nos. This takes away from the initial feel of the poem.
Poems are not limited to the two example genres I just showed you. Poems are, quite frankly, words put together in fancy order. Poems do not have to rhyme. Poems do not have to be sad. All they have to be is thoughtful. Beautiful poems branch from creative minds- remember that.

REMEMBER- Poems are beautiful no matter what! Throw together some artful sentences missing ending punctuation- you'll be surprised at how good it sounds.

Don't forget you need to have actual descriptive words, not like cute or scary, but like gracious, pleasurable, or horrific, and horrendous.
