I want to start my own little series about historical moments of the video game industry. So in this first episode, I'll start off with the Sega Dreamcast.

Sega. Ahh yes, good old times with them. (Even though, I wasn't even born at the time, I enjoyed their games.) They arose from the ashes from the American gaming crash alongside with Nintendo in 1984. Sega's most memorable moment was their strong rivalry with Nintendo during the 16-bit era. Nintendo vs Sega! The begenning of the the never-ending war.

Well, as years pass by, the 16-bit era was comming to an end. The SNES wins the generation, but other consoles were announced to start the new generation of gaming. The PlayStation, Atari Jaguar, and the Nintendo 64. Sega didn't want to join the next gen yet. They wanted the Genesis (or Mega Drive in Europe.) to be alive for a longer time. So they release their monstrosity add-ons for the poor Genesis. The Sega CD (Or Mega-CD in Europe) and the 32x. Both add-ons failed to keep the Genesis alive. Money was wasted, so they had no choice but to start making a new console.

The Sega Saturn was released as "Saturnday" (Saturday) September 2nd, 1995. And again, it was rushed like the Genesis add-ons. Not many great games, hard for developers to make games for, and was released a week before the PlayStation. The PS was $100 cheaper than the Saturn. And so again, it failed, and Sega killed it within two years after it's release.

Sega finally realized their mistakes they're doing. So they fixed all their problems with the Dreamcast!

The Dreamcast was released in North America on September 9th, 1999 and was sold for $199. (So many nines!) For the first time since the release of the Genesis, Sega had a succesful launch! Claimed to have the best launch titles, it was good news for Sega!

The Dreamcast was also the first console to have a built-in moddem to allow gamers play online. Most games people played was that quest game, (I forgot the name) and NFL 2K. A very good start for Sega, until one day...

In the year 2000, Sony reveals the PlayStation 2. After its announcement, many third-party developers started to make games for it, making the Dreamcast support to drop, and also its sales.

In January of 2001, Sega declairs death to the Dreamcast, and was discontinued later that year. (For Japan however, it did live a longer life than in America or Europe.) They also announced that Sega will now be a third-party developer.

So since then, Sega was no longer doomed of being bankrupt and will only focus on games.

So this marks as a historical moment of gaming. Sega drops out of the console market, started to make games on Nintendo platforms, (GASP) and had a nice relationship after that.

^Yep. If they got bankrupt, Microsoft could actually buy Sega instead of Rare.

Microsoft messed up Rare badly, censoring Conker, changing Banjo's genre, and the god damn Kinect Sports, if they bought Sega, who knows what crap they would've made.

I don't have much of a problem with this statement, just that it is very similar to the one on Wikipedia.

"The Dreamcast was also the first console to have a built-in moddem to allow gamers play online."

I'd like to point out that the first console to utilize online play using a modem wasn't the Sega Dream Cast, but rather the Sega Mega Drive in conjunction with the Sega Network System.
