Chapter One

When the ancient clans dispatched and giant cats roamed the country, five cats wandered into a familiar stretch of forest and formed the Five Recent clans. Thunderclan, Riverclan, Windclan, Shadowclan, and Skyclan, all with their own histories, stories, and paths to take.

As expected, however, even the Five Recent clans split up, as did the Four Ancient clans long ago. Cats scattered, bringing clan life around the globe; into kittypet dens, into dense forests, and even onto the rocky outfaces of cliffs. Anywhere the rumor could spread, it would.

And so, multiple clans sprung up, Clans with unique and new names. Most didn't survive, many fell apart, but a few had made it through, and one in particular has a story worth sharing with all cats who will listen.

The story of Stoneclan, and the warrior who saved it.

"Good morning, StoneClan! I am RippleStar, the strongest cat of them all!"

A voice rang out, waking Sparrowkit. He groaned and rolled over, and a flash of grey fur knocked into him.

"Hey, get off, snake pelt!" Sparrowkit turned and batted at his opponent, to tired to do any real damage.

"That's no way to insult your leader!"

"You're not the leader, mouse brain." Sparrow kit heaved his littermate off of him. Seedkit went flying, landing a little ways off.

"Hey, come on Sparrowkit, I was just playing."

"It's too early for games." Sparrowkit muttered.

"Not when your a warrior." Sparrowkit perked his ears at the voice of his mother, who came into the nursery with a robin in her mouth. "Even the most tired warrior needs to get up early for dawn patrol occasionaly."

Sparrowkit leaped up, "Mom! Mom! Can I have some of that robin?"

"I think you're old enough to choose prey yourself, aren't you?" She asnswered.

"Aw, but Seedkit gets to share!" Sparrowkit whined.

"Yes, because I'm only kit-sitting until Seddkit's mother comes back."

Sparrowkit sat down, glaring at Seedkit. "Well that's not fair...maybe Seedkit's mother should stay with him, like mine does." Sparrowpelt left the den muttering, "Maybe Seedkit's mother doesn't love him like mine does."

On his way out, he forgot all about his hunger when he saw his father coming back from the dawn patrol.

"Granitetail!" Sparrowkit ran over to him, bouncing with joy.

"Granitetail! What happened today? What did you see?"

"your too interested in the outside world. Stay where you belong, and out of my business." Granitetail greeted his son.

Sparrowkit's tail sank, and he watched as his father and the rest of the patrol passed. He continued to the fresh kill pile. He chose a rather skinny mouse, then headed back to the nursery.

Seedkit and his mother had already finished their meal, and rather than tattle on his father (His father said tattleing was unbecoming of a warrior) he sank into his nest and ate.

He knew some day he would be a warrior, and his father would be proud.

Until then, he just glared at Seedkit, sick with worry that his mother loved him more.

Chapter 2

Two moons had passed since then, and it became clear that Seedkit's mother wasn't coming back. She had gone rouge, and run off with a kittypet mate, leaving her old one, Shallowfoot, alone and despairing in the camp.

Seedkit constantly whined and complained, using his "motherlessness" as an excuse.

But today was Sparrowkit's day.

"Let all cats old enough to leap the canyons gather below!"

RippleStar called from above a large rock that jutted out from the base of the leaders den. He took pride in knowing that it resembled Thunderclans.

That day, Sparrowkit became Sparrowpaw, and Thornwhistle became his mentor.

Not two days later did Seedkit become an apprentice, even though he was a good moon younger than Sparrowpaw.

Of course, Sparrowpaw complained, but his mother wouldn't hear it. "You're his litter mate! You're like a brother to him, you should be happy!"

"But Feathershade...he's younger than me! It's the warrior code!"

"And his mother is gone forever. What about that, Sparrowpaw?"

To make things worse, Seedpaw was assigned to his father, and Sparrowpaw's heart dropped when he saw their noses touch. He wanted to make his father proud...not let this little brat take his place!

He sat down, and he did not cheer when the others called out, "Seedkit! Granitetail! Seedkit! Graintetail!"
"I love your eyes...but only with ketchup."

Bump.

The next few moons were painful. Constantly, Sparrowpaw was told, "Lift your chin! Lower your tail! Leap farther! Reach like a cat, not a squirrel!" And so on, while he heard nothing but praise for Seepaw.

One day, in leaf-fall, Sparrowpaw sat on a ledge overlooking a stony gorgue. Below, water gushed through, raging in powerful bursts. No cat was to go down there, or else risk losing their life.

But from up here, Sparrowpaw was safe, the roaring of the water so far away he didn't even hear it, and he always felt calm and able to think better.

He sat there, his tail curled over his paws, until it was time to join the Dusk patrol, when he left.

"He, Mousebrain," a familiar voice called out, and Sparrowpaw turned, seeing Seedpaw sneering at him.

"Why do you sit up there all day? Don't you know you could be doing more productive things? Huh? Like a WARRIOR would do?" Seedpaw looked at Sparrowpaw as if he were and idiot.

"It's calming up there, and-"

"You could fall to your death at any moment! No cat would know what had happened to you." Seedpaw interrupted him. "Not that, you know, anyone would care."

Sparrowpaw flicked his tail and started walking away. He knew what came next.

Seedpaw followed, happy he got a reaction from Sparrowpaw, "Yeah, your no big deal, if you died, we'd pick up and move on, no problem. We may hold a service for you, but hey, without a body, not even Ripplestar would stay all night. Let alone your mom, who, as you know, chose ME over YOU."

Sparrowpaw's fur bristled. He was upset, but determined not to show it.

"You know...I always wondered why your mother chose me...Maybe because I was better? Stronger?" Seedpaw paused in his teasing to look Sparrowpaw in the eyes, "Because I'm more warrior material?"

Sparrowpaw stopped and turned on Seedpaw, angry, "She didn't choose you, she just felt sorry for you because even your own MOTHER didn't want you!"

"Aw, now you've made me sad...Boohoo..." Seedpaw pretended to cry. "I didn't wanna hang out with you anyway."

Seedpaw finally left, and Sparrowpaw began picking his way over the smooth stone back to camp.
"I love your eyes...but only with ketchup."

When Sparrowpaw returned to camp, he was shocked to see that Seedpaw was wailing! His mother cowered over him, cooing.

"What happened?" Feathershade said, fussing over him and sniffing for injury.

"Sparrowpaw called me names, and said no one loved me! Not even my own mother!" Seedpaw paused to wail, then continued. "He shoved me, and I ran, but I twisted my paw on the rocks!"

Seedpaw then lifted his paw, letting it go limp.

"Aw, you poor thing....here, lets get you to the medicine den and let Pebblepelt have a look, alright?" Feathershade led Seedpaw away, and Sparrowpaw entered the camp.

Cats glared at him, and he knew why. He'd heard the whole thing. His mother came out of the medicine den, and at the sight of him, she scowled.

"What in Starclan's name did you CALL that poor kit?" She asked, rushing over to stand tall above Sparrowpaw.

"I didn't call him anything! He lied! I bet he didn't even twist his paw!" Sparrowpaw tried to stand up for himself, but he could already tell it was a battle he would lose.

"He came up to me, called me Mousebrain, and then-"

"That's enough! Start acting more like a warrior, or I'll have Ripplestar demote you to a KIT status again! You're the older kit, why not act like it?" Feathershade didn't let him speak as she strode away, back in the direction of the medicine den.

Sparrowpaw went to the apprentice den, refusing to bow his head in shame, and lay down inside.

The looks of hatred and disgust from his fellow clanmates would haunt him later, he knew.
"I love your eyes...but only with ketchup."
