Now, I'm a horror story writer, and I may have different views on how stories should go, as it goes. But, I do have to say, that many of the Plaza writers are infusing far too many quotes into their writing. Here is a quick lesson on why I say that incessant use of quotes is a bad thing:

In your English classes, you may have learned about Point of View. There are different POV's. One of those being:

1st person view: This is probably the easiest to classify, considering the story will use self-possessive pronouns, such as, "I" or "We". This is my personal favorite, as I can explain the character's emotions, in an easy way, that kind of subliminally work themselves into the reader's brain. There are 3 other types that I'd like to discuss.

2nd person: Contrary to popular belief, there is in fact a 2nd person POV. Articles to prevent suicide, and to tell people to take action, are all 2nd person stories. Be very gentle with this one, as this is the one that tends to offend people the most. There is not much else to say about that one.

3rd person: There are two types of 3rd person, and I am going to explain both of them.

3rd person limited: 3rd person limited suggests that there is a 3rd party listening in on the story, but can only see and hear the raw conversations, actions, and events happening. They can speculate on what is happening, but they can not tell for sure.

3rd person omniscient: 3rd person omniscient suggests that there is an all-knowing figure, looking down on the situation. This POV knows the characters' emotions; but not only the protagonist, or one character, but all of them. That is, apart from the pronouns used, the difference between 3rd person omniscient, and first person. Typically, quotes are used more often in this POV.

Please consider which one of these you are going to use, and then decide which literary elements should be used to complement these POV's as well.

Huge tip: Using too many quotes in your writing, makes it far too direct, and specific. You want specific writing, but you don't want it to be in your quotes. You want it to be subliminal from the actual writing. Be more vague, at times. Nothing catches an audience's attention more than the mystery of what is going to happen next.

No, quotes can be used in any of these, with the exception of 2nd person. Quotes are most often used in 3rd person limited. Also, if your character is alone, then there may not be any quotes in the entire story.
