Gauguin inspired artists like Picasso. He was homies with Van Gogh. Like damn dude. Why not read up on impressionism? This was the first time that Europeans saw portraits of the Tahiti people and lifestyle, if it doesn't seem that special to you.
A TON of influential and famous artists would not exist if not inspired by Gauguin. So yes, I would accept it being worth 300 million because that 300 million represents the start of an extremely important era of art. Cease and desist, you casuals.
