Coraline
She woke up in a dark room. A single light bulb swung from a string above her, and she was tied down to a chair with plastic cord that bit into her wrists painfully. Despite how cliche the moment seemed, she was panicking. Where was she?
A little girl came into the room, startling the woman by slamming open the door. She was dragging a chair behind her, and it made the most awful noise as it scraped on the wooden floors.
The little girl set the chair across from the woman, and placed a doll on the seat. The woman watched as the girl took time to straighten the doll, then tie it down to its chair, just like her.
"W...who are you?" The woman knew she probably shouldn't talk, but she did. She was feeling a little panicked, and felt as if she was slipping into hysteria.
The little girl simply stopped moving and let her hands fall to her side. She put a finger to her mouth, as if to silence the woman.
The woman started taking deep breaths, trying to stay calm.
Then the girl left, leaving the door open. The woman gazed out of it, but beyond there was only darkness. She also started looking for a window...anything to let light in. But there was nothing but that dreadful, dull light above her.
The woman tried to get out, twisting her wrists in the cords, but it almost seemed that the more she struggled, the tighter the cords got. Eventually, her wrists were so covered in blood she imagined she could just slip out...but it proved to be more painful, and impossible, than she had originally thought.
The little girl returned, a mysterious case in her hand that jingled when she walked. Her messy brown hair was up in a ponytail on top of her head. She wore a little blue, fading dress. The bottoms were frayed, and the girl was barefoot. No, barefoot wasnt true, she had what looked like tape wrapped around her feet and ankles, going up until the dress covered it.
The girl wouldn't show her face.
"Please, please tell me whats going on..." the woman begged. Her wrists ached something awful, and she could feel her feet going to sleep.
The child set the box she had returned with next to the doll on the chair, and placed a finger over her lips.
The woman felt herself tear up. "Please...."
The child popped a lock on her case, and it opened with a swift squeak. The smell that came out was...oddly beautiful. The woman was confused, and she twisted to see what was in the box.
The child suddenly turned to her, and the woman screamed. The girl's mouth was sewn shut, the stitches old and permanent. She raised a finger to her lip, but the woman continued to scream. The girl had no pupils, in fact, she had no eyes. Someone had sewn her eyes shut and put buttons in their spot.
The child put a hand on the womans shoulder and again placed a finger to her mouth.
The woman was able to shut up and just stare in silent horror. "You...you wouldn't..."
The girl put her finger to the womans mouth. It was covered by a glove, made out of an old bedsheet. The woman was quiet then, weeping silently.
Once she was quiet, the girl turned away and went back to the doll. She went to work, tearing out the hair...no, tearing wasn't the right word. She pulled it out, almost lovingly, like a mother stroking thier childs hair. Then she carelessly tossed the strands aside.
The woman noticed with dull interest that the hair was black. Her hair was red.
The girl pulled scissors out of her box and went snipping away. The woman could hear everything...fabric ripping, the scissors sliding through the cloth so easily. She would almost say that it was like an art. The girl reached into her box, then, and grabbed what looked like strands of long, red thread. She placed them on the doll, arranging them beautifully along her head.
"It's....quite beautiful, " the woman said.
The girl dropped everything, and turned to the woman. She put her finger to her lip, although this time, the woman could see that she wasn't looking at her with a child's playfulness. Her panic began to rise again.
"No, no, I meant, that, it's like...like an art..."
The girl stomped her foot and put a finger to her lip.
"D-dont be cross, please, I was only trying to-"
The child swung her arm behind her and slammed her sweet smelling box shut. She took a hand and swept it across the chair, knocking the box to the floor. The woman cringed as everything inside combined in one loud crash on the hardwood. The little girl ran out, letting the door squeak shut behind her.
The woman called after her, but it was no use. Again, she went for her restraints, but stopped and gasped in pain. The blood had dried to the plastic cords. Moving even her fingers proved extremely painful. She tried to move her feet, but found them both completely asleep.
The girl returned, then, with something that terrified the woman.
"Wait, wait...what is...?" The woman stammered. She tried to back up, but her feet wouldn't respond in thier dead state. She looked down at them, and was horrified to find that they were an ugly purple color.
The girl came closer with her tools.
"No, no, I'm sorry! Please DONT!" The woman screamed, the child getting closer.
The little girl produced three spools of thread to the woman. The woman was confused and frightened. "Whats...whats this?"
The girl held each one up once, blue, then red, then green.
Then the woman got it. She was picking her stitches. She began to weep softly and shake her head. "No, no..."
The girl put a hand to her chin, then nodded, yes.
The woman refused to choose, so the girl picked blue for her. She threaded the needle, the woman watching her...then went to work on the doll.
The woman nearly cried with relief. She wouldn't be getting stitches after all, it was just for the doll. But then, why was the girl...turning around, and coming closer after all?
"No, wait, for the doll, right?" The woman asked.
The girl help a finger up to her lip, then leaped. She knocked the womans chair backwards, and her head banged painfully on the floor.
"No, no, no, please..."
The little girl got off of her chest and used duct tape to attach her to the floor. The little girl leaned over the woman.
She reached behind her, and produced a doll, just like the woman, down to the clothes she was wearing...except, he doll had a sewn in smile and button eyes. The woman looked at the girl with fear, and the little girl put a finger to her lips, as she put in the first stitch.
