Sonic '91 and Sonic Adventure (DX) were the only great Sonic games. 2, 3, Blast and Triple Trouble were pretty good, I guess, but every other one was either unplayable ('06, Boom: Rise Of Lyric), had a bad gimmick that killed the game (Unleashed, Labyrinth), or were just extremely bad/boring (Generations, Adventure 2). Sonics career has had more bumps than the skin of a white girl in a meat locker.

Sonic '91 was good, but being the first game doesn't mean it is great. SA DX was a little boring, and SA 2 was incredible. 2 was good, 3 and Knuckles was amazing, and Blast was terrible. '06 and Boom are definitely the worst games in the series. Unleashed would have easily been a contender for best Sonic game if it weren't for the Werehog. Generations had a bad storyline, but its gameplay made up for it. The best game in the series would probably be between Sonic 3 + Knuckles and Sonic Adventure 2.

I'm not one of those people who thinks the original everything is unmatched and the best; far from it. A lot of music covers take the space in my phone because I hate the original songs for whatever reason; I hate the original Zelda, I don't really like Super Mario Bros. or the original Metroid; I just love the original Sonic The Hedgehog better than any other Sonic game (except maybe Adventure). I liked Blast OK; 3D Blast, on the other hand, was terrible.
